Jesus and the Disinherited
by Howard Thurman (Author), Kelly Brown Douglas and Vincent Harding (Foreword)
Famously known as the text that Martin Luther King Jr. sought inspiration from in the days leading up to the Montgomery bus boycott, Howard Thurman’s Jesus and the Disinherited helped shape the civil rights movement and changed our nation’s history forever.
In this classic theological treatise, the acclaimed theologian and religious leader Howard Thurman (1900-1981) demonstrates how the gospel may be read as a manual of resistance for the poor and disenfranchised. Jesus is a partner in the pain of the oppressed and the example of His life offers a solution to ending the descent into moral nihilism. Hatred does not empower–it decays. Only through self-love and love of one another can God’s justice prevail.

Season 3 Episode 43: Render Unto Caesar
Matthew 22:15-22
These words also challenge those who use religion to protect political power. Jesus’ opponents attempt to force him into a choice between religious faithfulness and political compliance. Instead, Jesus distinguishes what belongs to Caesar from what belongs to God. Money may circulate through political and economic systems, but that money has moral implications. Human dignity cannot be reduced to a political or economic possession. Governments may claim jurisdiction over territory and taxation, but they cannot legitimately claim ownership of people. To give Caesar what belongs to Caesar is therefore not necessarily to give Caesar everything Caesar wants. And to give God what belongs to God means recognizing that every human being bears God’s image. Any political system that forgets this places itself above the very people it is supposed to serve. We must not surrender our conscience, dignity, compassion, or commitment to justice to Caesar. Governments may demand taxes, obedience, or allegiance, but the image of God is stamped upon every human being more deeply than any political authority can impose its own image upon a coin.

Finding Jesus: A Fundamentalist Preacher Discovers the Socio-Political & Economic Teachings of the Gospels
by Herb Montgomery
Available now on Amazon!
In Finding Jesus, author Herb Montgomery delves into the profound and often overlooked political dimensions of the gospels. Through meticulous analysis of biblical texts, historical context, and social discourse, this thought-provoking book unveils the gospels’ socio-political, economic teachings as rooted in a profound concern for justice, compassion, and the well-being of the marginalized. The book navigates the intersections between faith and societal justice, presenting a compelling argument for a more socially engaged and transformative Christianity.
Finding Jesus is not just a scholarly exploration; it is a call to action. It challenges readers to reevaluate their understanding of Christianity’s role in public life and to consider how the radical teachings of the gospels can inspire a renewed commitment to justice, equality, and compassion. This book is a must-read for those seeking a deeper understanding of the social implications of Christian faith and a blueprint for building a more just and inclusive society.
