All About Love: New Visions

by bell hooks

A New York Times bestseller and enduring classic, All About Love is the acclaimed first volume in feminist icon bell hooks’ “Love Song to the Nation” trilogy. All About Love reveals what causes a polarized society, and how to heal the divisions that cause suffering. Here is the truth about love, and inspiration to help us instill caring, compassion, and strength in our homes, schools, and workplaces.

“The word ‘love’ is most often defined as a noun, yet we would all love better if we used it as a verb,” writes bell hooks as she comes out fighting and on fire in All About Love. Provocative and intensely personal, renowned scholar, cultural critic and feminist bell hooks speaks to society stricken with lovelessness—not the lack of romance, but the lack of care, compassion, and unity. People are divided, she declares, by society’s failure to provide a model for learning to love.

In this landmark book, bell hooks explores the question “What is love?” Disputing that the ideal love is infused with sex and desire, she provides a new path to love that is sacred, redemptive, and healing for individuals and for a nation. All About Love is a powerful, timely affirmation of just how profoundly love and community can change hearts and minds for the better.

Part of the groundbreaking “Love Song to the Nation” trilogy that includes Communion and Salvation

On the New York Times bestseller list for over a year.

Speaks to the mind and the heart about the transformational power of love to heal society.

A Disability Informed Reading of the Jesus Story

Part 1 of Learning to Learn From a Canaanite Woman

This metaphor is especially problematic because it uses disability as shorthand for moral and intellectual deficiency.

Compassion Rather Than Inerrancy

Part 2 of Learning to Learn From a Canaanite Woman

New Episode of The Social Jesus Podcast

A podcast where we talk about the intersection of faith and social justice and what a first century, prophet of the poor from Galilee might have to offer us today in our work of love, compassion and justice.

This week:

Season 3 Episode 34: Learning to Learn From a Canaanite Woman

Matthew 15:10-28

A disability-informed reading invites interpreters to distinguish between the intended target of Jesus’ criticism, the leaders whom he believed were misleading others, and the metaphor he employs to express that criticism. Modern readers need not perpetuate the equation of blindness with ignorance or evil. Instead, they can recognize that blind people lead, teach, create, parent, and contribute in every sphere of society. The real issue in our reading this week is not blindness but irresponsible leadership. Reframing this passage in this way allows readers to preserve its critique of harmful authority while rejecting language that stigmatizes disability. Such a reading encourages both faith communities and biblical interpreters to examine how inherited metaphors may unintentionally reinforce prejudice and to seek more inclusive ways of speaking about wisdom, justice, and leadership. Our reading also reminds us that even deeply embedded biases can be confronted through authentic encounters with those who have been excluded. Marginalized voices are not merely recipients of justice; they are often its teachers. The Canaanite woman becomes an agent of transformation, expanding the visible scope of Jesus’ ministry and foreshadowing the Gospel’s ultimate movement toward all nations. Her persistence demonstrates that faith can challenge systems of exclusion and open new possibilities for mercy, justice, and belonging.

Finding Jesus: A Fundamentalist Preacher Discovers the Socio-Political & Economic Teachings of the Gospels

by Herb Montgomery

Available now on Amazon!

In Finding Jesus, author Herb Montgomery delves into the profound and often overlooked political dimensions of the gospels. Through meticulous analysis of biblical texts, historical context, and social discourse, this thought-provoking book unveils the gospels’ socio-political, economic teachings as rooted in a profound concern for justice, compassion, and the well-being of the marginalized. The book navigates the intersections between faith and societal justice, presenting a compelling argument for a more socially engaged and transformative Christianity.

Finding Jesus is not just a scholarly exploration; it is a call to action. It challenges readers to reevaluate their understanding of Christianity’s role in public life and to consider how the radical teachings of the gospels can inspire a renewed commitment to justice, equality, and compassion. This book is a must-read for those seeking a deeper understanding of the social implications of Christian faith and a blueprint for building a more just and inclusive society.
