"We can come to know the world as paradise when our hearts and souls are reborn through the arduous and tender task of living rightly with one another and the earth. Generosity, nonviolence, and care for one another are the pathways into transformed awareness. Knowing that paradise is here and now is a gift that comes to those who practice the ethics of paradise. This way of living is not Utopian. It does not spring simply from the imagination of a better world but from a profound embrace of this world. It does not begin with knowledge or hope. It begins with love."    - Rita Nakashima Brock & Rev. Dr. Rebecca Parkera ; Saving Paradise: How Christianity Traded Love of This World for Crucifixion and Empire, p. 409

"A theology of love cannot afford to be sentimental. It cannot afford to preach edifying generalities about charity, while identifying ‘peace’ with mere established power and legalized violence against the oppressed. A theology of love cannot be allowed merely to serve the interests of the rich and powerful, justifying their wars, their violence and their bombs, while exhorting the poor and underprivileged to practice patience, meekness, longsuffering, and to solve their problems, if at all, nonviolently. A theology of love may also conceivably turn out to be a theology of revolution. In any case, it is a theology of resistance, a refusal of the evil that reduces a brother or sister to homicidal desperation . . .  Instead of preaching the Cross for others and advising them to suffer patiently the violence which we sweetly impose on them, with the aid of armies and police, we might conceivably recognize the right of the less fortunate to use force, and study more seriously the practice of nonviolence and humane methods on our own part when, as it happens, we possess the most stupendous arsenal of power the world has ever known."
   - Thomas Merton ; Toward a Theology of Resistance

“Some live by love thy neighbor as thyself others by first do no harm or take no more than you need. What if the mightiest word is love? Love beyond marital, filial, national, love that casts a widening pool of light, love with no need to pre-empt grievance. In today’s sharp sparkle, this winter air, anything can be made, any sentence begun. On the brink, on the brim, on the cusp, praise song for walking forward in that light.”    - Elizabeth Alexander ; Praise Song for the Day

"When you start with an understanding that God loves everyone, justice isn’t very far behind."    - Dr. Emilie M. Townes ; Journey to Liberation: The Legacy of Womanist Theology

"Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”    - Jesus ; Matthew 22.37-40

"If there is no friendship with them and no sharing of the life of the poor, then there is no authentic commitment to liberation, because love exists only among equals."    - Gustavo Gutierrez ; A Theology of Liberation: 15th Anniversary Edition

"I am poor and naked, but I am the chief of the nation. We do not want riches but we do want to train our children right. Riches would do us no good. We could not take them with us to the other world. We do not want riches. We want peace and love."    - Red Cloud ; Oglala Lakota Sioux (1822-1909)

As I passed by again, I saw that the time had come for you to fall in love. I promised to love you. Yes, I made a marriage covenant with you, and you became mine." This is what the Sovereign Lord says.

   - The Apostle Paul ; 1 Corinthians 13:7

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us . . .

   - John the Beloved ; 1 John 3:16

And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

   - Paul ; Colossians 3:14

Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth.  It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.    - Paul ; 1 Corinthians 13.4-8, NRSV

"Hatred ever kills, love never dies - such is the vast difference between the two. What is obtained by love is retained for all time. What is obtained by hatred proves a burden in reality for it increases hatred."    - Mahatma Gandhi ; Unsourced Quotations

"When days grow dark and nights grow dreary, we can be thankful that our God combines in his nature a creative synthesis of love and justice which will lead us through life’s dark valleys and into sunlit pathways of hope and fulfillment."

   - King Jr, Martin Luther ; A Tough Mind and a Tender Heart

PRAISE THE Lord! (Hallelujah!) O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His mercy and loving-kindness endure forever!

   - The Psalmist ; Psalms 106.1, AMP

My response is to get down on my knees before the Father, this magnificent Father who parcels out all heaven and earth. I ask him to strengthen you by his Spirit—not a brute strength but a glorious inner strength—that Christ will live in you as you open the door and invite him in. And I ask him that with both feet planted firmly on love, you'll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ's love. Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God.

   - The Apostle Paul ; Ephesians 3:14-19 (The Message)

Love does not take into account a wrong suffered.

   - The Apostle Paul ; 1 Corinthians 13:5

Love is patient and is still kind, love is not jealous.

   - The Apostle Paul ; 1 Corinthians 13:4

We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

   - John the Beloved ; 1 John 4:16

No one has seen God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His love is perfected in us.

   - John the Beloved ; 1 John 4:12

The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

   - John the Beloved ; 1 John 4:8

Because lawlessness is increased, most people's love will grow cold. But the one [whose love] endures to the end, he will be saved.

   - The Apostle Matthew ; Matthew 24:12-13

But for right now, until that completeness, we have three things to do to lead us toward that consummation: Trust steadily in God, Hope unswervingly, Love extravagantly. And the best of the three is love.

   - The Apostle Paul ; 1 Corinthians 13:13, The Message

Put me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm. For love is as strong as death, jealousy is as severe as Sheol; Its flashes are flashes of fire, the very flame of the LORD. Many waters cannot quench love, nor will rivers overflow it; if a man were to give all the riches of his house for love, it would be utterly despised.
